ECDL FAQ
What is the ECDL?
The European Computer Driving Licence® is the first qualification
in ICT skills recognised across the European Union. It is designed for
people wishing to gain a basic qualification in computing to help them
with their job, with career prospects, or for home users who wish to feel
more in control of their PC!

of the British Computer Society (BCS), who co-ordinate ECDL activities
nationally.
How long does it take?
The general rule of thumb is that if you’ve never used a computer
before, it may take 40 hours or so to work through the materials for the
seven modules.
We find that people like to work fairly quickly through familiar modules
and take more time on applications they haven’t used before…
as long as the tests are all taken within a three year period, you can
work at your own pace!
When does the course run?
The course runs very flexibly… once you’ve signed up, you
can attend any of the drop-in sessions after school. Click here for
full
details of opening times.
Where can I sit the tests?
Hallam CLC is an accredited ECDL testing centre. There are others that
you can find on the BCS website. Click

I’ve heard that you need a log book?
Yes, we will issue you with your log book; this is the official record
of which of the seven module tests you’ve passed.
If you already have a logbook, you will need to bring it with you to sit
a test.
What are the tests like?
When you’ve worked through a module and feel confident that you’re
ready to take a test, you attend one of the testing sessions.
The tests are online, and look just like the many practice questions you
will have worked through. You simply log in, and have 45mins to answer
around 40 questions (60 mins for 60 Q’s in Module 1).
How long does it take to get the results back?
When you’ve answered all the questions, you are told instantly on-screen
whether you have passed or failed!
If you’ve passed, your log book is stamped and signed for that module.
If you’ve failed, you need to go back to that particular module
and spend some more time on the materials and practice questions, before
returning to resit the test.
What does it cost?
Hallam CLC is currently working within the South Yorkshire e-Learning
Programme to be able to provide this training free of charge to the local
community. Similarly, the log books (normally £25) and tests (normally
around £10) are provided through this scheme.
What happens when I have passed all 7 modules?
Your logbook will be sent to the British Computer Society and you will
then receive a certificate.
